The Future Perfect Goldwyn House: A Harmonious Blend of Art, History, and Design
Nestled at the foot of Hollywood Hill, amidst the timeless allure of old Hollywood, lies the Future Perfect Goldwyn House—a remarkable fusion of art gallery, residence, and furniture showroom. I recently had the pleasure of exploring this extraordinary space, and I'm thrilled to share the experience with you.
A Home Rich in History
Originally the home of Hollywood icon Samuel Goldwyn, the Goldwyn House has been reimagined by The Future Perfect into a living gallery of modern design. Despite its contemporary makeover, the house still exudes the charm and elegance of its storied past. As you wander through its halls, you're greeted by a seamless blend of the home's 1930s architecture and a curated collection of contemporary pieces. It's like stepping into a dialogue between eras, where each room and object has a story to tell.
The Art of Curated Design
The Future Perfect has meticulously selected pieces from a variety of artists and designers, making each item an integral part of the house's narrative. In the living room, a hand-carved marble coffee table by Chen Chen & Kai Williams caught my eye, with its organic shape reminiscent of a rare geological find. Overhead, Lindsey Adelman’s chandelier, with its branching form, cast a soft, otherworldly glow. The interplay between natural and artificial elements creates a thoughtful and harmonious ambiance.
A Home You Can Live In
One of the most captivating aspects of the Goldwyn House is how it makes high design feel accessible. Each piece, while a work of art, also feels like it belongs in a home. There's a welcoming warmth that invites you to interact with the space, blurring the lines between gallery and home.
The outdoor areas are equally magical. Stepping onto the terrace, you're treated to a breathtaking view of Los Angeles, framed by lush gardens. Modern sculptures by artists like Jonathan Cross and Matthew Day Jackson add focal points, enhancing the natural beauty of the setting.
An Object in Highlight
A highlight of the Future Perfect Goldwyn House is the Cypress chair, crafted by JB Blunk from a massive piece of wood in 1973–74. His friend and mentor, Isamu Noguchi, described Blunk's work as embodying a "courage and independence" that reflects a typically Californian spirit, free from conventional art categories. Blunk's artistic journey was profoundly shaped during his time in Japan, where he met Noguchi and apprenticed with potters of the Mingei Movement. There, he embraced the wabi-sabi philosophy and developed a deep appreciation for the connection between man and nature.
The Cypress chair exemplifies this intimate relationship, showcasing Blunk's passion for natural materials and organic forms. It stands as a testament to his unique vision and the rich cultural influences that shaped his artistic language.
